Arts & Recreation

In a city no larger than six square miles, more than 15 parks offer basketball courts, baseball diamonds, picnic areas and a recreational facility. Maybe this is the reason that Harvey seems to be a breeding ground for professional athletic talent. Or maybe it’s not simply the parks, but the important values instilled by progressive organizations like the Harvey Boxing Club. Here, the motto “Better to sweat in the gym, than bleed on the streets” has helped recruit more than 50 active members and has helped keep Harvey’s streets clean.

The City of Harvey has yet to come up short in the athletic arena. When looking at current and past professional athletes — such as NFL-star Barry Gardner and the late Lou Boudreau (a Baseball Hall of Fame inductee) — talent seems to be in the blood of Harvey citizens. Adult softball leagues, pee-wee football leagues, the Harvey boxing club and many other athletic outlets provide both the youth and adult population of Harvey plenty of opportunities to get involved. For a city its size, Harvey, Illinois churns out quite a few professional athletes. If any indication is from its previous and current stars, the City of Harvey can look forward to more of its own heading into professional sports in the future. Youth sports is alive and well in Harvey. A core social, educational and growth component for years, organizations like the Harvey Boxing Club, the little league baseball teams and the pee-wee football teams keep the Harvey’s children active and competitive on a national level.

Restoration Ministries’ Harvey Boxing Club

With more than 50 boys and girls participating in the club, this organization thrives on building esteem for youngsters and building confidence. “Better to sweat in the gym, than bleed in the streets” is the motto of the club, opened in 2002 as a part of gang prevention and youth development programs.

Practices are Monday through Saturday, and include extensive conditioning and cardiovascular training. Kids run three miles, as well as 100-yard and 50-yard sprints.

Locals like Jose Arambula have even gained a ranking as the No. 3 boxer in the nation in his weight class. Arambula attended Coolidge Middle School at that time.

The club is located at 15331 Broadway. For more information on the Harvey Boxing Club, please call 708-333-8353.
